Our team provides chronic edema and lymphedema management that clients across our service area can rely on, delivered directly to your home. Lymphedema is a condition where fluid builds up in your body's tissues, causing swelling that does not go away on its own. It most commonly affects the arms or legs but can occur anywhere in the body.
There are two types:
Something a person is born with. The lymphatic system did not develop properly, making it unable to drain fluid the way it should.
Far more common, particularly in Canada. It develops as a result of another health condition such as uncontrolled chronic diseases, obesity, or following cancer treatment or surgery where lymph nodes have been removed or damaged.
Swelling that lasts longer than three months stops being simple edema and becomes lymphedema. Left untreated, tissues become firm and hardened, the affected area grows heavier, movement becomes more difficult, and the risk of serious skin infections increases significantly.
The good news is that with the right care, lymphedema can be managed effectively, symptoms can be reduced, and quality of life greatly improved.
